 My husband is an American citizen and I am a Canadian citizen, currently awaiting the processing of our inland spousal sponsorship application. Unfortunately my husband had to return home for an emergency and when he tried to cross back in to Canada a couple weeks later, he had an extremely unpleasant encounter with the border agent at the port of entry and was denied entry to Canada due to the border agent not being familiar with the policies and procedures put in place. With our application in jeopardy, and the stress of being apart from my husband especially during this time, I contacted Betsy Kane based on her excellent reviews for guidance and assistance in our situation.  I can not put into words the amount of gratitude I have for the Capelle Kane firm, specifically, Betsy Kane. I am an American citizen and my partner is a Canadian citizen. My partner and I consulted with Betsy prior to a family trip for a wedding outside of Canada. During the trip COVID 19 erupted and the borders began to close. Our return to Canada should have been an easy process since we are common law through the Canadian Government. It was the exact opposite. My encounter with the Canadian Border Services Agent was extremely hostile. The agent ignored our signed and notarized statutory of declaration for a common law union (which is a Canadian document, signed by me, my partner, and a Canadian Notary) and claimed it to be invalid therefore deeming me unable to enter Canada. After separating my partner and I the agent began speaking to me using very derogatory words and telling me that I was to be immediately driven to closest border crossing. Betsy was there for us during the entire process. As soon as she was told that the agent was trying to send me away she called and spoke to the agent, and the supervisor. It was apparent that the agents did not fully understand the Canadian law. I am so thankful that Betsy was there for us during this time. Her knowledge and experience on these matters allowed me to return with my family during this crisis. Had we not had Betsy on our side, I am certain that I would have been separated from my partner and sent to be alone in upstate New York.
