Coleen Morrison

Early in her career Coleen spent a brief period with the Canadian Intellectual Property Office (CIPO) representing Canada and CIPO, nationally and internationally, at the first consultative meetings on domain names and trademarks. Her involvement in International IP law, including domain names and IP treaties such as the Madrid Protocol and Singapore Agreement continues to date.

Coleen joined a large International firm in 1997, became a Partner in 2000 and served as Managing Principal – Trademarks from 2001 to 2017. She also took on the role of Senior Principal from 2014-2017.

Coleen is the President of FICPI’s (International Federation of Intellectual Property Attorneys/Fédération Internationale des Conseils en Propriété Intellectuelle) Work and Study Commission (CET). She also holds the position of Vice President with FICPI Canada. Coleen is an INTA member and is the past Chair of the Intellectual Property Institute of Canada (IPIC) Trademark Joint Liaison Committee. She is a member of the Canadian Bar Association and the Law Society of Upper Canada as well.

Coleen is listed as an expert by Who’s Who Legal, which states that she is “praised for being ‘excellent to work with’ and for her ‘clear and practical method underlying her work’”. Coleen is recognized as one of the World’s Leading Practitioners in Euromoney’s Expert Guides – Trade Marks 2016. Who’s Who Legal says “Coleen Morrison is a long-standing expert in trademark law with vast experience both as a lawyer and trademark agent.”

Coleen graduated from University with a Bachelor of Science Degree before pursuing graduate work in Biological Oceanography, as well as a Juris Doctor Law Degree at Dalhousie University. Coleen articled and worked as a junior with an Ottawa-based IP firm primarily involved in litigation. She was called to the Ontario Bar in 1996.
